AVIATION TALES:-THE HISTORY OF AIR INDIA!
BEGINNINGS 🕰
Air India origin was at tata air services and was founded by JRD tata in 1932. JRD was the first person to receive a pilots license issued in India. His passion immediately turned into a plan to build India’s first commercial airline in the early 1930s.
Tata Air Services began its first year by transporting mail. Soon, Operations grew rapidly, with the airline increasing more destinations across India for mail, and began carrying passengers.
THE RISE 📈
In 1938, the airline was renamed Tata Airlines and expanded internationally for the first time. The carrier added dozen or so new destinations.
After world war 2 and India’s independence, the government took a 49% stake in the carrier, which had been renamed Air India.
Eventually the government nationalized Air India and took it out of Tata’s control. JRD Tata returned to lead the airline as its chairman soon after.
MOVING FORWARD⏩
Air India continued to grow and the carrier focused on acquiring the latest jets.JRD Tata was removed as chairman of Air India in 1977, placing the airline’s control into government hands. The 1980s and 1990s saw Air India continue to remain successful internationally, However, the next decade saw Air India run into problems.
THE FALL📉
Despite its successes in the past few decades, the government was trying to privatize Air India by 2000. However, attempts to do so failed due to a number of reasons, mostly to do with government control.
Furthermore, its domestic side, Indian Airlines, was struggling as well. The government opted to merge both carriers in 2007. However, the newly merged Air India began racking up many losses.
TODAY🥇
sadly, the carrier racked up billions of dollars in debt. All of this has forced the government to fully give up control and put it up for sale for the first time ever.
After over a year of bidding, On October 8, 2021, Tata Sons won the bid with $2.4 billion. Gaining ownership of Air India, Indian Airlines, and Maharajah brands, as well as airport slots at 173 destinations worldwide and 141 planes.
